Competitor backlinks: turn a gap into a research question

A competitor backlink gap is a difference between the inventories you compared. It becomes a useful opportunity only when the source page is relevant, still exists and has a plausible reason to reference your work.

Pick competitors for the same audience

Include sites that compete for the topic or resource you are researching. A large general publisher may overlap on one query while having a very different link profile. Document why each comparison belongs in the set.

Match the inventories

Use comparable export dates, target scopes and filters. Decide whether subdomains count. A domain-wide export compared with a single-page export will create apparent gaps that come from the setup. Keep those boundaries beside the result.

Compare domains, then inspect pages

A referring-domain comparison helps group repeated sources. Keep the underlying page URLs so you can distinguish an editorial citation from a profile, syndicated copy or unrelated mention. Multiple rows from one host are not automatically independent opportunities.

Explain inclusion and exclusion

Write down why a candidate passed review, and keep exclusion reasons such as irrelevant audience, duplicate source or no editorial route. A repeatable review is more useful than repeatedly sorting an unexplained list.

A practical example

Imagine two competitors share a citation in a municipal resource page and each has hundreds of directory rows elsewhere. The shared municipal source deserves a look if your resource serves the same residents. It does not deserve an outreach message merely because two competitors appear there. Check the page topic, eligibility and current contact route first.

A gap report answers “what differs in these inputs?” It does not establish completeness of the web, prove an existing link was lost or predict a publisher will add yours. Preserve the original inventories and check dates so a later reviewer can reproduce the comparison.

What you can use in AgentLinkOps

AgentLinkOps has competitor research tool contracts, but the live gap workflow is still in validation. Approved, frozen inventories and their scope are prerequisites for a meaningful comparison. Importing an arbitrary export alone does not establish a bound competitor inventory.

Read the tool guide and connection requirements before setting up a workflow.
